The Kohler Experience
Today's Elegance, Yesterday's Charm in Wisconsin
by Jennifer Olvera

The American Club
The American Club

Located an hour north of Milwaukee and just steps away from the Kohler Design Company, The American Club once was the home of immigrant workers from the famed kitchen, bath and fine furniture manufacturer. Today, this Tudor-style property's stateliness is evident in its steep slate roof, red brick exterior and dormered windows-is a place of luxurious respite for discriminating guests.

A trio of three-story wings, appointed in rich oak paneling with antique furnishings and the country's largest collection of horse and carriage artwork, form a labyrinth around dramatic garden courtyards.  Elegant yet understated, the 237 guest rooms and suites feature Kohler fixtures, including oversized whirlpool tubs, furniture by Baker and McGuire, and Ann Sacks tile accents. On-site, there are four restaurants, including The Wisconsin Room, an upscale dining room serving Midwestern fare, and jackets-required The Immigrant Room, known for its contemporary cuisine and early settler-inspired décor.  Numerous other restaurants of note on Kohler Village properties include the log cabin-esque Blackwolf Run Restaurant, which boasts panoramic views of its namesake golf course and overlooks the Sheboygan River.

Golf alone is a big draw since the village is home to two championship 18-hole golf venues designed by Pete Dye: the Blackwolf Run course (host of the 1998 Women’s Open) and Whistling Straits (home to the 2004 PGA Championship). The former boasts the Sheboygan River as its backdrop, while the latter resides on the shores of Lake Michigan. The surrounding private 500-acre wilderness preserve and hunt club features twenty miles of trails perfect for hiking and cross-country skiing.  Guests also can check out the 85,000-square-foot Sports Core, a fitness center and racquet club with a family pool.

The restorative, European-inspired Kohler Waters Spa continues the Kohler fixture theme with respite rooms that feature a steam room, sauna, tiled whirlpool bath and cool plunge pool, plus a menu of services that focus on innovative water treatments. Conference facilities include over 21,000-square feet of space nestled into nineteen secluded rooms, among them a boardroom with private garden patio and fireplace and an executive presentation amphitheater. Guests should venture out into the Kohler Village at large to take in notable attractions and recreational opportunities. The Shops at Woodlake is home to a gourmet grocery store, fine art galleries and demonstration kitchen featuring weekly chef presentations. And the Kohler Design Center, which is a short drive from the property, offers inspiration for visitors with an array of working baths, fixtures, lavatories and faucets, fully designed kitchens and baths and a museum gallery detailing the 130-year-plus history of the company.
