Communing With Nature
A Nirvana for Sun Worshippers
by Evelyn Chen

Banyan Tree Villa
The Banyan Tree Bintan in Indonesia boasts 64 villas modeled on traditional Balinese architecture.

At a sedate remove from the bustle of Singapore, just 60 minutes via a catamaran ride, is the town of Bintan. Located in the Riau Archipelago (Indonesia), Bintan leads a double life; at its northern tip, Bintan Resorts (Lagoi) is a colony of Singapore in all but name.

A nirvana for sun worshippers, snorkelers and anyone looking to commune with nature on their own terms, Lagoi has enough to offer guests with differing budgets and interests. If you are looking for romance and are ready to splurge, look no further than Banyan Tree Bintan (BTB).

Built in 1995, BTB comprises 64 villas modeled on traditional Balinese architecture. Each secluded villa is raised on stilts or tucked into steep “foresty” gorges, resembling a stone and thatch village—admittedly an upscale one.

Dinner on the Beach at Banyan Tree The Banyan Tree Spa

Upon arrival, you are offered a welcome drink of ginger and lime. After check-in in the comfort of the air-conditioned library, a buggy (or golf cart) whizzes you to the villa, where rough textured lava stone embellishes its entryway. We were housed in a bay-front villa where the wooden door opens into a cozy courtyard with a Jacuzzi overlooking the breath-taking South China Sea. A sliding door beckons as you step into the comfort of your bedroom. Here, rattan blinds dress the sea-facing windows while diaphanous mosquito netting drapes the alluring wooden four-poster bed.

To ensure complete privacy and total exclusivity at dinnertime, skip casual eateries such as “The Cove” or “Treetops” and opt only for the very best. There is “Reflection”—a private table set up over a floating platform on a rock edge pool where you feast on an Asian-accented five-course continental meal and end with coffee luwak mousse. For those with deep pockets and an adventurous spirit to match, opt for “Dinner on the Rocks”—descend to the dramatic rocks by the beach via a long flight of steps and a wooden walkway where a personal butler cum chef awaits you. Here, you dine under the stars while the waves crash against the surrounding boulders.

Before you head back home, remember to spend a languorous afternoon at Banyan Tree’s highly revered spa. Couples can book a two-hour Rainmist Rejuvenation Package in the privacy of their own Royal Spa Villa. For body exfoliation, opt for the traditional blend of kemiri nuts, ground rice grain and coconut milk; gentle on the skin and effective in sloughing off dead cells.
