Rosewood CordeValle - Hotel Review

Secluded Luxury in the Santa Cruz Mountains

San Martin, Ca. is a teensy unincorporated town in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains, where the most notable landmarks include the Wings of History Aviation Museum and a Boot Barn. And then there's Rosewood CordeValle, a luxury retreat hidden among sprawling oak trees and meadows—yet just minutes from the heart of Silicon Valley.

While the term "hidden gem" is tossed around so often that it's begun to lose its meaning, Rosewood CordeValle is truly just that. Though it's only a 90-minute drive south from San Francisco and a mere 30-minute drive south from San Jose, the resort's remoteness makes you feel as if you've flown thousands of miles away.

The resort comprises 1,700 acres of undulating hills and includes a 260-acre, 18-hole professional golf course. Resort guests and members can choose to stay in Rosewood CordeValle's 45 elegantly-appointed bungalows or villas. There is also a handful of spacious 3,100- square foot, four-bedroom Fairway homes.

Whether you stay in one of the latter, a villa suite (each named after a famous golf legend), or a bungalow—done up plantation-style with hardwood floors, shutters and commanding views of the superb Robert Trent Jones, Jr. golf course—you are in for a treat. Rooms are well-appointed with King-size beds with goose-down comforters for top notch comfort, flat-screen TVs, complimentary high-speed wireless Internet access, fireplaces, and original artwork. Elegant sliding French doors lead out to very private patios with lounge chairs and a bistro table (great for having breakfast) and views onto the hilly landscape.

Beyond the sheer beauty of the location and the attention to luxury (Frette linens, deep jacuzzi tubs in each room, twice-daily housekeeping), it's the surprisingly thoughtful touches that really set Rosewood CordeValle apart.

Turndown service includes a bottle of water left at your bedside and a linen cloth for your precious feet to step on as you climb into bed. If you've left your various toiletries out on the countertops, housekeeping neatly places each one on a towel. Upon noticing our eyeglasses left on a desk, a lens-cleaning cloth was thoughtfully left for next to them. Thanks to a temperature dial in the shower, you can adjust the water to be the perfect temperature.

Other lovely amenities include a saltwater pool that leaves you feeling refreshed, not bleached out. Well-marked hiking trails encircle the property and are dotted by various "decks," wooden platforms that are great for snapping pictures or having a picnic (the resort will pack one for you). There's also the nearby 85-acre Clos LaChance winery, which staff will drive you to via golf cart. In fact, anytime you are too tuckered out to walk to or from your room, you can request a golf cart to whisk you to your next destination.

The 5,000-square-foot Sense spa features grape seeds in specialty treatments like the harvest crush, a body scrub of crushed grape seeds and rosemary combined with a massage and hair treatment with warm seeds. Each treatment room has a private garden designed to invite the outdoors in.

Executive chef Luca Rutigliano comes to Rosewood CordeValle from The Carlyle in New York. Known for working with local growers to create menus influenced by his Italian roots, he's at his best when he sticks to simple preparations, which can be enjoyed at Il Vigneto. You can also dine at casual Lion's Peak Grill on an outdoor patio or One Iron Grill for contemporary California cuisine. Rutigliano's presence is central to Rosewood CordeValle. Almost every weekend the resort hosts some kind of culinary event based around the chef's skills and connections.
