January 19-March 28 The Fairfax at Embassy Row Hotel, in conjunction with its signature restaurant, 2100 Prime, is pleased to announce the Third Annual Capital Wine Festival starting January 19. The 10-week dinner event kicks off with a grand opening reception on January 19 at 7 p.m. which will highlight the 10 wineries sponsoring the event. Local wineries (Breaux Vineyards, Tarara Winery and possibly Barboursville) will attend the Grand night’s festivities. Modeled after the Boston Wine Festival, the dinners, hosted by either the winemaker or proprietor, will showcase wines from California and Oregon. Founder of the event, Daniel Bruce has invited ten phenomenal wineries to participate. Menus will be created by the 2100 Prime chef to complement the vintner’s selection for each dinner. February 11-12 Head to the International Wine & Food Festival at the Ronald Reagan Building & International Trade Center February 11 and 12, 2012, for one of the most comprehensive indoor wine events in the country. Sample over 1,700 wines from around the globe at this exciting wine show. The festival also offers courses taught by some of the world’s greatest wine experts and celebrity chefs. February 15 On February 15, the Roof Terrace Restaurant at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts is featuring Champagne & Everything Bubbly!, an event that is part of its monthly Wine & Cultural Celebration Series, in which patrons are invited to experience wines or spirits of a particular type or region paired with food and entertainment. Executive chef Joe Gurner will prepare assorted hors d'oeuvres. The event starts at 6 p.m. and ends at 9 p.m. Cost is $40 per person. Roof Terrace Restaurant, The John F. February 18-19 Enjoy unlimited tastings of over 300 of Virginia’s hard-to-find artisan wines at the Virginia Wine Showcase in Washington DC. The showcase is located at Dulles Expo Center on February 18 and 19, 2012. Also, get tips on tasting, serving and pairing wines and stock your pantry with handcrafted gourmet fare. February 24-26 Sharpen your palette and brush up your glass-swirling skills. The 5th Annual Virginia Wine Expo (VWE) takes place February 24-26 in Richmond, VA. VWE offers attendees a unique opportunity to sample and purchase more than 400 Virginia wines. New additions to the weekend include: Walk-Around Grand Tasting: 5:30-10 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24. Two luncheons featuring Richmond’s culinary stars: Virginia Wine Lovers’ Luncheon at Acacia Mid-Town with meals prepared by chef Dale Reitzer. Late Winter Harvest Luncheon at Lemaire Restaurant led by Chef Walter Bundy. The weekend will also feature four new wine and food pairing seminars, including one about pairing modern charcuterie with Virginia wine and a 90-minute seminar called, “Your ‘Pleasure’ Senses and Professional Wine Tasting Techniques.” While visitors are in Richmond, they can visit a nearby winery such as New Kent Winery or James River Cellars. Richmond is also home to a variety of wine bars such as Secco and Amour Wine Bistro in Carytown, the C’est Le Vin wine bar and art gallery in Shockoe Bottom and The Wine Loft in the West End. There are more than 200 farm wineries in Virginia. The state is now the nation's fifth largest wine producer and seventh largest wine grape producer. Ongoing Bourbon Steak has added flights of rare and exclusive Scottish and American whiskies to its beverage program. The Whiskey Tasting Trios ($30) allow guests to enjoy three whiskies that have at least one common feature, be it producer, region or bottler, while learning about the characteristics that make each drink unique. Pastry chef Santanna Salas has created a Chocolate Trio dessert ($11) to complement the flights: Ovaltine-soaked devil's food cake with chocolate ganache and dehydrated chocolate mousse, chocolate custard with red velvet cake, spicy pecans and chocolate foam and chocolate brownie with Nutella ice cream. Monday-Friday The "Hour of Power" takes place Monday through Friday from 4 p.m.-6 p.m. in the lounge at The Source by Wolfgang Puck. This happy hour alternative features a trio of food items paired with a flight of wines. Executive chef Scott Drewno kick-starts his new menu with a trio pairing in which guests can enjoy three types of dumplings, each matched with a specially selected glass of wine. Offerings will change frequently and future specialties will include trios of soups, spring rolls and ribs.
