Volvo
Named after the Latin "volvere" ("to roll" in English), the aptly titled Volvo car corporation was founded in Gothenburg, Sweden in 1915, although the manufacturer's first automobile didn't roll off the assembly line until 1927. While that car, affectionately known as "Jakob," earned a paltry 28 horsepower and topped out at 37 mph, today's Volvos are known for delivering solid performance and top-of-the-line safety features. Acquired by Chinese auto giant Geely in 2010, Volvo looks poised to continue producing high-quality automobiles well into the future.
