Akbar is a successful chain of Indian restaurants that manages to blend an upscale ambience with inventive and homey fare. The tandoori oven produces not only the usual chicken, kebabs and puffy breads, but also creative specialties. Start with crab cakes topped with mango chutney, a large jalapeño stuffed with spiced cheese and chutney, and spicy tandoori grilled chicken wings. Chefs make the chutneys --- coconut, cilantro and pickled vegetable --- fresh daily. Hawaiian ono is marinated in mint, and lamb chops are dense with ginger flavors, while curries include okra cooked with onions and chile, lamb and potatoes in a tangy tomato sauce, and blue crab claw meat in a coconut-tamarind sauce. For dessert, expect homemade ice cream with saffron and pistachio, as well as mango and chocolate crispy rolls. In addition to the requisite Indian beers, there's a well-chosen and fairly priced wine list with vinos that pair well with the spicy cuisine.
