With a diverse menu of Mediterranean dishes---not only Spanish tapas but also items hinting of the Middle East, Greece, France and beyond---Alexandria is a casually elegant place in which to explore these respective culinary traditions. Chef Beni Velazquez does an excellent job with Spanish specialties like tortilla Española, bacalao fritters, paella Valenciana and Rioja-braised lamb shank, as well a few dishes from beyond the Iberian Peninsula, including his take on moussaka and spanakopita. Dessert showcases churros with dark chocolate dipping sauce, honey-yogurt or fig ice cream; and honey-lemon bread pudding. The ambience---part Persian palace, part sleek L.A. dining room---features modern art, ornate chandeliers and banquettes with throw pillows. A short Mediterranean wine list is quite moderately priced.
