Big Bar Restaurant Review:
The Alcove café and bakery has long been a favorite of hipster Los Feliz, and adding a little vintage bar to this charming 1916 Craftsman bungalow space completes it. The long marble bar is adorned with gleaming Deco-era bartender tools and offers a separate menu. Here, there’s no waiting in line to order, and the entire Alcove menu is available; conversely, if you want to sit on the rustic see-and-be-seen patio, cocktails are also served there. An expansive list of handcrafted drinks was created by mixologist Juan Sevilla, formerly of Edison and Soho House, but if he’s not the one making them the results may vary. Look for unusual house-made ingredients like pickled kumquats, and other fresh additions ranging from chervil to cherry shrubs. The selection of craft beers and West Coast boutique wines is interesting and moderately priced. The bar menu is small, select and delightful. We recommend the trio of juicy Angus beef sliders topped with bacon, aged Vermont cheddar, arugula and avocado. Crab toast is served on brioche with Fresno chiles, and a charcuterie plate or cheese tower is fine for sharing.
