Black Trumpet is housed in the century-old Grand Victorian hotel, close enough to the Atlantic to hear the rolling surf and inhale the salty air. Chef-owner Mark Mikolajczyk is the kitchen talent who likes to surprise with clever presentations such as Manasquan Inlet day boat sea scallops with red beet couscous and a chive and fennel slaw, or chicken breast scaloppine dusted in black pepper and flamed with whiskey over creamy manchego grits and spinach. The accent is on seafood harvested from neighboring seaside locales. A variety of desserts are crafted daily. Service is polished and professional, if somewhat harried on busy summer weekends when the house is inevitably full. When the day is cloudless, opt for dining al fresco on the wraparound porch.
