This Hastings on Hudson restaurant offers a little taste of rustic French life on the other side of the Atlantic. A widely held tenet of French cooking is to avoid flavors that compete for attention. Buffet De La Gare's cuisine takes this principle seriously, and every effort is made to preserve classicism in method and preparation. Quintessentially Gallic selections include sliced sweetbreads atop salad, with French string beans, warm xeres and balsamic vinaigrette; and the house duck pâté with peppercorn and Armagnac. Consider following with the duck, crispy on the outside and moist within. A notable wine list and desserts like the tarte Tatin round out the experience. The décor boasts plenty of tiles and bright colors, but otherwise, the place is still what one might expect from a longstanding French establishment: beautifully appointed tables in two rooms avoid the sometimes cafeteria-like feel of a vast space.
