THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Chestnut Restaurant Review:
The ambitious yet cozy Chestnut suffers from a bit of an identity crisis. Is it a special occasion spot in the Grocery vein (its Smith Street neighbor) or a more accessible everyday joint? The dining room, featuring spare white walls and scuffed wood floors, is warm and inviting. Complimentary house-made pickles further add to the homey vibe. But the menu---and prices---speak to higher aspirations. For small plates, try the potato gnocchi served with oyster mushrooms, prosciutto and mâche. Entrées run the gamut of pork chops with agridolce figs and white polenta to red grouper and pink shrimp with avocado, yucca and young ginger. Pasta and vegetarian options are also on the menu. For the most part, the restaurant's specialties are divided between the bold and the banal.
