The Grain House Restaurant Restaurant Review:
Why ask what’s new at The Grain House Restaurant when it’s so much more interesting to ask what’s old? This historic property situated in the rolling hills of Somerset County started out as a water-powered gristmill built in 1768. Still handsomely trimmed with beamed ceilings and commanding fireplaces, The Grain House is a delight for its ambience as well as its reimagined American fare. Dishes include smoked chicken potpie made with local Griggstown Farm chicken stewed with crimini mushrooms and root vegetables and baked under a savory sweet potato biscuit crust, and prime reserve pork chop stuffed with manchego and figs, and served with heirloom carrots and potatoes “smashed” with scallion goat cheese. Food is prepared with a modern, light touch and well-balanced seasonings. Desserts are made in-house; one of the best is apple baklava strudel with cranberries, walnuts and almonds, complemented by vanilla bean ice cream and warm honey.
