| Why ask what’s new at The Grain House Restaurant when it’s so much more interesting to ask what’s old? This historic building situated in the rolling hills of Somerset County was built 240 years ago. Still handsomely trimmed with beamed ceilings and commanding fireplaces, The Grain House is a delight for its ambience as well as its American fare. Dishes have included pan-fried Maryland crab cake served with cucumber and jalapeño salsa as well as ginger aïoli, and veal Wiener Schnitzel accompanied by Austrian bread dumplings, candied lemon and braised red cabbage. Food is prepared with a modern, light touch and well-balanced seasonings. The kitchen uses local and organic ingredients when possible in dishes such as the Griggstown Farm roasted chicken breast with panzanella, roasted garlic and white bean purée. Desserts are simple but tempting. Choose the warm brownie à la mode; it comes with hot fudge, berries and whipped cream. If your tastes run to the more sophisticated, try the mascarpone and pumpkin deep-dish cheesecake with candied pistachio and sour cream icing. |
