THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Gus & Gabriel Restaurant Review:
Michael Psilakis can do no wrong when it comes to Mediterranean fare, but how does he do with dishes from this side of the Atlantic? Not so well, it turns out. Psilakis rolled out Gus and Gabriel Gastropub after moving a tune-up version of Kefi out of the space, and the end result smacks of too much, too soon. The bar food standards, for the most part, are bland. The burger, topped with Gruyère and onion rings, is queasily off-putting in its greasiness while sounds-great-in-theory dishes like crispy chicken and a tomatillo salsa fail in the execution. It’s too bad, as the concept shows an understanding of the Upper West Side’s need for family-friendly, crowd-pleasing fare. If you must, go with the spaghetti and meatballs---Psilakis' skills with a sphere of meat remain unblemished---or the high-concept potato skins, which include Cincinnati-style chili. As expected, a large selection of beer is available as well as plenty of wine by the glass.
