Hatchet Hall Restaurant Review

: Chef Brian Dunsmoor and front-of-house counterpart Jonathan Strader, who found success with the Wolf in Sheep's Clothing pop-up, The Hart & the Hunter and Ladies' Gunboat Society at Flores, partnered with Louie Ryan and his wife, Netty, on this rustic American restaurant in Culver City at the former location of Waterloo & City. Hatchet Hall features a vine-covered patio, granite oyster bar, long bar and the "Old Man Bar" in the back with a speakeasy feel. Dunsmoor presides over a white oak grill and sources from farmers' markets to produce a daily-changing menu featuring tasty dishes such as diver scallops crudo, wood-grilled octopus and pork chop in brown butter maple jus. Complementing the entrées is a suite of creative vegetable sides including okra, turnips or carrots. Meals are filling but leave room for Paige Russell's caramelized banana cream panna cotta. Cappy Sorentino oversees the cocktail program while Maxwell Leer showcases an unusual wine program. Despite its rustic setting, the restaurant not only has a romantic presence, but also an edgy vibe.
