THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Hollywood Canteen Restaurant Review:
The Canteen is one cool place to gather with friends in a roomy burgundy booth. Bette Davis and John Garfield opened this stylish boîte on October 3, 1942, and it soon became popular with servicemen and Hollywood actors. The building is one of those classic stucco jobs from 1930s Hollywood, and there’s even an old Airstream trailer from the 1940s, which serves as a “love den.” The new millennium is evident in the kitchen's use of organic foodstuffs. Sushi is wonderfully fresh, and we're also fond of the cheddar burger with basil, bruschetta salsa and balsamic aïoli, New York steak with “hot and spicy” noodle soup and Canteen-style chicken with Dijon mustard. For dessert, try the homemade chimichanga cheesecake or strawberry crème brûlée. Lunchtime can get busy with nearby studio types, so make reservations or prepare to wait.
