Serving beachside Mexican food since 1981, Las Olas (The Waves) helped pioneer the fish taco, putting it on the San Diego culinary map. The expansive menu offers dishes such as shrimp and scallop enchiladas, flame-broiled chile relleno and chilitos (sliced and batter-fried jalapeños with melted cheese). Baja fare, like Puerto Nuevo-style lobster, beer-battered cod and shrimp, go nicely with icy cold cervezas. The grilled mahi taco is a tasty and lighter dish, and other healthy eats include a vegetarian plate with zucchini, bell peppers, onions, broccoli, rice, beans and tortillas. Many of the “healthy options” have been on the menu longer than most of the surfer customers have been alive. Las Olas is the perfect spot for charbroiled carne asada burritos or fall-off-the-bone carnitas. We also suggest the lightly grilled vegetable quesadilla and pollo asado with mango salsa. Sweet-tooths are satisfied with the caramel cheesecake flan. Locals like to warm up with the Pineapple n' Chile Margarita featuring house-infused roasted pineapple and jalapeño tequila.
