Zaftigs Eatery Restaurant Review:
From the Yiddish adjective for the pleasantly full-figured, Zaftigs occupies a suitably large space, often crowded with Brookline families. Big, bold paintings of bygone delis and plump Jewish mothers adorn the walls. The menu, unexpectedly, puts modern touches on old-fashioned deli fare. Sure, you'll find traditional Jewish favorites like kugel, latkes and knishes but everyone seems to flock here for the two-and-a-half-hander sandwiches, like the Nanny Fanny, filled with corned beef, coleslaw and Russian dressing. We’ve got a soft spot for the open-face meatloaf melt with cheddar. We also enjoy the enormous and interesting main-course salads like the salmon and roasted corn. Classics such as the stuffed cabbages are less successful, lacking the depth of flavor that would be carefully coaxed from them under more authentic circumstances. That said, don’t miss the New York-style cheesecake with raspberry sauce and whipped cream. Also located at 1298 Worcester St., Natick, 508-653-4442.
