THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Pastis Restaurant Review:
The massive, bold signage tips us off immediately that Pastis (named after the classic Provençal aperitif) is not a strictly traditional bistro and isn’t likely to rival memories of dining on a side street in Avignon. But despite its vibrant colors, hard surfaces and oversize modern art, this little restaurant maintains a rustic spirit beneath its contemporary L.A. packaging. Although we've sometimes encountered snail-paced service, we're still happy with such bistro fare as the steamed black mussels in garlic-and-shallots sauce, escargot profiteroles, charcuterie plate, and warm goat cheese and artichoke tart. Entrées include bouillabaisse, rack of lamb and a Moroccan chicken tagine. The wine list covers the world and offers some decent values. And on Wednesday nights, you can buy one bottle and take a second one home for free. While it may not be our favorite, Pastis remains among the coolest bistros in town.
