Restaurant Kiyono Restaurant Review

: Kiyono is a friendly, family-run operation that occupies a storefront on South Beverly Drive. The space is more handsomely furnished than most neighborhood sushi bars, with modern Italian light fixtures spanning the room on wires, and huge oil paintings lining the walls. A polished black-granite sushi bar provides a worthy stage for quality morsels of seafood from some exotic waters, but the bare Formica tables distract from the otherwise refined scene. We were impressed with the pink, heavily marbled toro (often a good measurement of a sushi bar) and inventive hand rolls like the "Dr. John," with crab meat, spicy tuna and scallions. The tuna “biscuits” is a better-than-usual version of the ubiquitous spicy tuna on crispy rice cakes dish now served everywhere, and we enjoyed the miso-glazed black cod, another sushi house staple. Tempura, sukiyaki and teriyaki specialties are also available at Kiyono, which caters to the local neighborhood and tourists from nearby hotels. For dessert, black sesame mochi makes a pleasant finish, and a well-chosen saké list is reasonably priced. The owners are extremely gracious, never taking their guests for granted, which is refreshing indeed.
