![]() : Chef April Bloomfield (The Breslin Bar & Dining Room, formerly of The Spotted Pig) spared little expense in the resurrection of this iconic North Beach café that has nursed San Francisco’s literati for nigh a century. A hulking stainless-steel espresso machine anchors the café’s narrow, boisterous bar, where savvy bartenders turn out refreshing twists on classic cocktails. The dark, sultry dining room oozes nostalgia, and wrapping oneself in a clamshell red leather booth feels bereft without a bourbon or gin cocktail in hand. Bloomfield’s talent shines in lighter dishes. Braised Spanish octopus and poached fennel are both nicely executed and well proportioned. Firm English peas and favas feature playfully in the summer minestrone and prosciutto-laced lumaconi, and a moist, Parmesan-crusted pork chop headlines the mains. However, the fritto misto was undone by a heavy hand of salt and the bucatini was unremarkable. Cognac-heavy tiramisu pairs wonderfully with the boozy house “cappuccino,” though we recommend surrendering your keys before ordering. |
