![]() : Restaurateur/interior designer Dana Hollister (Cliff’s Edge) is behind Villains Tavern in downtown L.A. The Gothic space features deep red walls and ornate vintage chandeliers, along with two patios with an outdoor bar and stage. From the formidable antique bar (salvaged from a nineteenth-century New York tavern), friendly bartenders pour two dozen draft beers and a selection of cocktails made with fresh ingredients. Beers are served in icy Ball jars and can be mixed with a shot of liquor---anything from Gosling’s dark rum to Sazerac rye---for a so-called Villains Mix & Match. Signature cocktails include hanzo (Plymouth gin, mint, cucumber and citrus) and Brazilian-inspired cerberus (cachaça, white peach and pineapple). Addictive fried chickpeas are the favorite bar snack here, but there is some bona fide food to go along with the ample libations, such as a half-pound burger topped with a bacon-cherry marmalade, and an aged cheddar grilled cheese with a tamarind chili. |
