| Ocean Drive is an unlikely place to pull off a civilized tour de force in dining, but 1220 manages to do just that. Whether dining in the elegantly appointed room adjacent to the lobby while a pianist tickles the ivory, or on the terrace overlooking Ocean Drive while exulting in the warm Atlantic breezes, you'll likely be charmed by the ambience. Chris Tapper is the head chef, and he has made subtle changes to the Miami-inspired, progressive American menu, mostly by way of spicing it up with ingredients from Asia, the Mediterranean and the Caribbean. Look for mahi mahi with gnocchi, chorizo and preserved lemon sauce; and yellowtail snapper with bok choy, oyster mushrooms, edamame and bonito flakes. One constant is 1220's commitment to catering to the palates of deep-pocketed tourists and heavy-hitting locals expecting cuisine that matches the chic sophistication of The Tides Hotel. This clientele will surely be appreciative of the exceptional wine list---ask your server to help pair a glass with your meal, and you won't be sorry---until you uncork the bill, and unless your financial profile resembles those of 1220's regulars. |
