Solid American cooking wins high marks at this Arlington eatery, notable for a young-hungry crowd, generous portions, and a kitchen that pays attention to full-flavored recipes. In keeping with the trend to put a spin on classics and to meld international flavors into an American-style meal, the kitchen turns out such appetizers as a roasted beet salad with goat cheese, shrimp and grits, and Vietnamese-style lettuce wraps with a shredded duck confit filling. For another Asian-style appetizer, consider an order of the tuna lollipops with a seaweed side salad. But chef Brian Robinson makes bold statements with his all-American entrées, and his crisp-yet-tender fried boneless chicken breast may be the best such chicken in town. Resting on a bed of three-potato mash and accompanied by steamed seasonal vegetables, this presentation is a winner for its comfort-food classiness. Also worthy: his braised short ribs with macaroni and cheese, the duck breast with sweet potato hash, and the burger. Homemade desserts include a chocolate bread pudding, a seasonal fruit cobbler, and coffee with tiny donuts.

Overrated, Overpriced
by ClaireVA on 02/16/2010

My boyfriend took me to 3 for dinner on Valentine's Day. The complementary bread basket included rosemary flat bread (which had great flavor but a very stale texture) and cornbread muffins (these were VERY dry and one of our two muffins was badly burnt). My boyfriend ordered the duck breast; he found it to be under-seasoned and under-cooked.
I ordered the rockfish and had requested mashed potatoes instead of the creamed leeks and potato crab cake the dish came with. It was served to me with the leeks and potato crab cake; I waited several minutes with the intention of finding the waitress to ask her to fix the error, but after a little more than 5 minutes I gave up and just ate what was in front of me. The rockfish was overcooked and had a pungent fishy smell. The whole meal was a disappointment.
