8½ Otto e Mezzo Bombana Restaurant Review:

Perched on the top floors of the former Associate Mission Building, the restaurant has a commanding view over the confluence of Suzhou Creek with the Huangpu River. You can see both the historic sights of the northern bund area, including Garden Bridge, and the futuristic Pudong skyline. Despite the historic building, the dining area, which is intimate with eight tables, has a modern accent with a metal mirrored ceiling and plush black and white carpet offset against the dark wooden paneling. Umberto Bombana’s original restaurant in Hong Kong opened in 2010. The Shanghai branch under the wing of executive chef Riccardo La Perna carries on the tradition of offering gourmet contemporary Italian fine dining. Service overseen by the watchful eye of Gian Luca Fusetto is attentive with courses arriving seamlessly and staff knowledgeable about the menu. Offerings change regularly according to seasonal availability, but there are a few permanent dishes. Australian lobster fettuccine contrasts the earthiness of tomatoes against the sea taste of hunks of crustacean. For mains, the Mediterranean three-way tuna is recommendable with the tartare and otoro being particularly good. Desserts have included a lemon tart with tangerine sorbet and a vanilla panna cotta. The wine list is heavily skewed toward Italy and the five hundred or so bottles start from a relatively steep $70. In warmer weather, begin or end a meal at the seventh-floor terrace bar.
