THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Agave Cantina & Tequila Restaurant Review:

On the bustling hipster stretch of Vermont, Agave is a stylish but down-to-earth restaurant-bar that offers affordable Mexican specialties. An airy high-ceilinged room features pretty fountains, potted agave and a large backlit bar stacked with rows of tequila bottles. It’s owned by the same folks as next-door 1739 Public House (and connected), so patrons can also order off one of the best craft beer menus on the Eastside. But the atmosphere at Agave is infinitely more pleasant, and if tequila’s your thing, the giant leather-bound menu offers a fact-filled tequila history and 200 varieties from silver to reposado, anejo, extra-aged, and mezcal. The bar does up a nice sangría, and margaritas and mojitos are standard but drinkable---and inexpensive. The food is no afterthought here. We recommend the camarones borrachos, or drunken shrimp, which arrives elegantly sculpted in a giant margarita glass, immersed at the bottom in Herradura tequila and combined with avocado and salsa, then topped with grilled shrimp; and the fresh guacamole that zings with lime. The steak quesadilla is satisfyingly rich, and mains---all $12 or under---range from a velvet chicken mole to a Veracruz-style red snapper.
