The contemporary ambience at Alchemy on South Park’s restaurant row is spruced up with rotating art, and the energy is high from an enthusiastic crowd. We suggest the “snacks,” a treasure trove of clever edibles like crispy curls of flatbread to dip in hummus and salty tapenade; and nuggets of Estancia Farms steak “pintxos del dia,” with buttery, meaty zucchini bites. Small plates mean fresh oysters from Carlsbad Aqua Farm or grilled asparagus in a bold romesco sauce. Executive chef Ricardo Heredia unabashedly experiments---some dishes succeed more than others, but overall it works. His amuse one evening appears as dried persimmon layered with drunken goat cheese and a Mexican shrimp perched on top. His Niman Ranch pork shank falls off the bone and mingles with sweet company---whipped garnet yams in a tiny cast iron pan. Three words for dessert: Alchemy crunch bar. Well-thought-out cocktails, over 100 wine selections, vegetarian tasting menus, winemaker dinners, absinthe service, a classy brunch and sharp staff add further spark to the scene.
