Alero Restaurant Restaurant Review: Years ago, Alero produced terrific tacos and attracted a cross-section of Washingtonians. Today the kitchen turns out only moderately good fare, but it still has the attractive al fresco deck overlooking Connecticut Avenue. Crowds are smaller, burritos are only so-so, but in warm weather you can claim your hour in the sun, sifting through the menu’s mix of Tex-Mex and Salvadoran dishes. Get off to a good start with the taquitos Veracruz or chorizo Mexicano. By meal’s end, though, you’ll probably have decided that the best item on the menu is the refried beans. Desserts include tres leches cake, sopapillas and fried ice cream. Also located at 1724 Connecticut Ave. NW, Washington, DC, 202-234-8100; and 1301 U St. NW, Washington, DC, 202-234-9885.
