Alexis Restaurant Review: Brimming with warm hospitality and a menu of traditional Greek dishes, Alexis offers a bright and fun dining experience right in the thick of Portland’s Old Town. Servers --- many of whom have worked here for decades --- are personable; they’ll entertain your baby and make conversation with everyone at the table. Ordering the combination platters or family-style selections is the best option for large groups so many items may be sampled. Favorites are the garlicky tzatziki, lemony hummus, crispy fried squid, satiny-smooth melitzano, and tender cubes of grilled lamb. Gyros are huge, and the Greek salad well supplied with feta cheese and olives. In a nice change from the standard pita, Alexis stocks tables with baskets of its own hearty, thickly-crusted bread. For beverages, choose from a range of retsinas, ouzo, wine and beer. And for dessert? It's sweet, flaky baklava, of course.
