| For a three or four year period, Alloro was a buzz-worthy proving ground for up-and-coming chefs...many of whom have gone on to national stardom. (Suzanne Goin of Los Angeles Lucques is a case study.) But that is no longer true, and this quiet North Ender has settled into its own as a to-the-point Italian kitchen with seductive power to spare. Where creativity once roamed free, the menu hardly ever rocks the boat nowadays. By and large, it is dominated by dishes like shrimp scampi, linguine with fresh tomato sauce, anchovies and black olives, and lemon-roasted chicken. We adore the baroque antipasti platter and the bright flavors of the shrimp-and-fennel salad. So why cant more dishes like those nudge the cream-sauce contingent off the menu for good? |
