In the heart of downtown Berkeley, Amanda's offers a healthy take on fast food. From the crowds of hungry Cal students and office workers filing into the bright, clean space at lunchtime, it appears that the naturally-raised burgers, baked fries and organic salads are a welcome alternative to greasy eats in this neighborhood. From our seats at the communal reclaimed wood table, we enjoyed the not-too-big size of the original burger and the house-made veggie burger on whole-wheat buns, and found the baked sweet potato fries tasty, if a bit limp. Combo meals are a good option for a satisfying---but not overly heavy---lunch, at prices made for student wallets. The freshly made sodas are standouts, especially raspberry and lemon-lime, and compostable cups and straws are a bonus.
