Amelia's serves Mexican food, but savvy diners opt for Salvadoran specialties such as the hand-patted pupusas (griddled corn masa filled with chicken, pork, cheese or beans). The traditional way to eat these snacks is to spoon on some curtido, a spicy cabbage slaw. Platters of salpicon (beef salad) or chicken encebollado (onions and grilled chicken in sauce) are accompanied by fried yucca, the starch of choice in Central America, plus sautéed plantains and, of course, beans and rice. Wash it all down with a refreshing ensalada de fruta, a fresh fruit beverage topped with chopped fruit and watercress.
