| The temptation is to say André’s is “quaint” because it is located in a small rural community in New Jersey’s Northwest Skylands region. Homey lace curtains adorn the windows and little vases of fresh flowers grace every table and the staff is warm, informal and friendly. But the food…oh, the food…from chef André deWaal’s kitchen is modern, innovative and very sophisticated. Many of the internationally inspired dishes are made with locally grown, organic ingredients and are listed with wine pairing suggestions from the restaurant’s small but carefully chosen wine list. On a menu that changes twice monthly, there are myriad temptations such as lightly breaded, boneless pork loin accompanied by roasted pepper watercress or soft and silky pan-roasted scallops served with bacon smashed potatoes. Food lovers who are also economy-minded will find much to savor on the “bistro” menu---a less expensive alternative menu---with dishes such as simple but satisfying roasted garlic chicken with mashed potatoes or pastas with various sauces. Tracey deWaal, the chef’s wife, oversees the front of the house with considerable grace and is always willing to make recommendations based on her husband’s handiwork. Sweet endings come with house-made desserts such as lemon marshmallow cream pie which tastes as good as it sounds. |
