Appetito Cal-Italian Restaurant Review

: When you walk in to Appetito Cal-Italian, you're likely to see a chef making fresh pasta at a station next to the door. That's indicative of the commitment to quality at this Italian-accented gastro-deli, a project from restaurant professionals Patrick Service and John Shay. The large indoor space features industrial elements like concrete floors, exposed ductwork and white subway tiles but the wood walls, tables and chairs bring a warm, rustic feel. Booths and banquette seating line the sides, while a couple tables have been placed together in the center of the room to create a communal vibe. There's also a bar with a TV as well as a patio out front with a fire pit. Diners place their orders inside at the counter, which also features a display case of imported meats and cheeses as well as Appetito's handmade pastas available for purchase. Kick things off with shrimp arancini (crispy risotto balls) or the strawberry-beet salad with goat cheese, arugula and basil vinaigrette. Micro-local sourcing of ingredients is a priority. The Italian sausage that accompanies the "Spaghetti & Sunday Sauce" comes from Fulvio's Foods, a passion project from local meteorologist Patrick Evans. Ricotta gnocchi and braised lamb malfatti are additional tempting options. From the panini section, the signature porchetta sandwich pairs particularly well with Coachella Valley Brewing Co.'s Appetito Ale --- no surprise since it was brewed especially for the restaurant with that dish in mind. Rounding out the offerings are pizzette, specials and sides such as cheesy garlic bread. For dessert, choose between the tiramisu profiteroles or house-made gelato. Coffee is supplied by Koffi, the locally owned mini-chain of java joints that roasts their own beans. (One of the locations happens to be next door.) There's also a selection of draft beers, wines by the glass or quartino, negronis and a few frozen cocktails to boot. On the second Wednesday of the month, Appetito Cal-Italian hosts a popular Pasta Night cooking class plus three-course meal.
