Just finding the Arts & Letters Café is part of its magic. To get there, you have to walk through Sullivan Goss, one of Santa Barbara's premier art galleries. The café features seating inside one gallery room, but we prefer the open terrace with tall trees, flowing fountains and ambient classical music. We also like the local slant to the food here. The white sea bass---cooked in a coconut broth and served with bok choy, squash, garlic, scallions and pepper---is fresh from the Channel Islands; the house salad is prepared with produce from nearby Shepherd Farms. Sandwiches are big by design, so bring your appetite; you can't go wrong with the smoked turkey with warm Brie on whole-wheat. And for its freshness, we recommend the flash-grilled ahi served with crisp baby bok choy and soft fingerling potatoes.
