Athens has been serving up round-the-clock diner fare for longer than most Charlotteans can remember, and boasts what is perhaps the most diverse clientele in the city. Saturday nights, around 2:15 a.m., rowdy party folks flock to the vinyl booths for late-night grub to balance the beer. Just eight or so hours later, families in their Sunday best gather round the chrome and Formica kitchenettes for soul-satisfying breakfasts, including some of the best pancakes around. As for the rest of the week, it is a must for the budget-conscience patron seeking heaping portions of classic diner fare as well as excellent Greek specialties. Effortlessly retro, this Charlotte institution looks and feels the same as it did when the doors first opened...and that is priceless.
