The temptation is to say André’s is “quaint” because it is located in a small rural community in New Jersey’s Northwest Skylands region. Homey lace curtains adorn the windows and little vases of fresh flowers grace every table; the staff is warm, informal and friendly. The exposed brick walls of each dining area feature a rotating exhibit of works by local artists and photographers. Rural and charming, yes, but the food from chef André deWaal’s kitchen is modern, innovative and sophisticated. Many of the internationally inspired dishes are made with locally grown, organic ingredients and are listed with wine pairing suggestions from the small but carefully chosen wine list. On a menu that changes twice monthly, there are myriad temptations such as penne duck confit with truffle cream sauce; sautéed foie gras with apricot mostardo; and grilled salmon with coconut curry and rice. Food lovers who are also economy-minded will find much to savor on the “lighter fare” menu --- a less expensive alternative menu --- with dishes like Andre’s bacon cheddar burger and a main course Caesar salad. Sweet endings come with house-made desserts, but follow this advice: order the cheesecake.
