| The gentrified cousin of the original, also in Gaithersburg, this location is as bright and sparkling as a fresh coat of paint, but lacking the time-worn character of the first Ay! Jalisco. The menu is all about moderately good Tex-Mex fare doled out in modest portions. Take the nachos appetizer, a platter of tortilla chips with ground beef, salsa and a dollop of guacamole---a ho-hum dish elevated by the addition of the guacamole. With an eye on finding something different as a starter, you might try a pupusa or a tamal, an indication that the menu has its roots in the Salvadoran kitchen. Nevertheless, the main menu shifts focus to the Tex-Mex fare most of us know so well. We tried the Ay! Jalisco burrito with hopes of finding something totally different, but alas, this comes bathed in cheese and salsa. For dessert, try the chongos, made of chilled bananas and a chunk of cream cheese wrapped in a flour tortilla. The original location is at 8401 Snouffer School Rd., Gaithersburg, 301-840-5894. |
