Bakesale Betty sells a tempting array of home-style desserts, many with an Australian bent---blue wig-wearing owner Alison Barakat hails from the land Down Under, and also did a three-year stint at Chez Panisse. We like her ginger cookies, brownies and lamingtons, squares of sponge cake split and filled with jam, then dipped in chocolate and rolled in coconut. And the lemon bars are first-rate; ditto on the sticky date pudding. The menu also lists a few sandwiches, and those in the know opt for the fried chicken sandwich: tender fried chicken strips on a soft roll topped with mayonnaise-free slaw. This sandwich tends to sell out, so get there early if possible.
