| Mark Haugen has struck Cuervo gold with this fun and funky Uptown restaurant that trades in first-rate margaritas and a well-seasoned grill. The secret to Bar Abilene's margaritas? Fresh fruit purées, a base mix that is made every day plus a healthy imagination. Where else can you find, in addition to standards such as strawberry and lime, exotic choices such as prickly pear, apple cider and chocolate? We’re partial to the Latin Lover margarita (made with passion fruit). Happy hour is a fine time to try its 25 flavors and 100 tequilas, and appetizers like potato-pepper jack flautas and cayenne-dusted calamari. The tableside guacamole is essential. If you decide to stay for dinner, we recommend the hickory-grilled burgers and Tex-Mex specialties that include fajitas with three salsas. A word of warning: Bar Abilene can be boisterous and loud. Despite the deceptively strong drinks, it's not the best place for a romantic evening. |
