Barbarella Restaurant Review: Proprietress Barbara Beltaire helms this upbeat neighborhood restaurant. The space is smartly divided into cozy rooms with a moody ambience courtesy of the double-sided fireplace. The open-air patio and garden area make for good alfresco dining and people-watching. We can't get enough of the French onion soup, with its intense broth and decadent melted Gruyère. Ditto the sautéed broccoli rabe with fresh buffalo mozzarella. For lunch, there are salads galore, like an authentic Greek or a Chino chopped salad with subtle cilantro vinaigrette. The wild mushroom pizza, infused with redolent truffle oil, is our favorite midday bite. For an entrée, try the lemon-roasted chicken, braised brisket and steak frites. Whole-roasted fish from the wood-fired pizza oven are simply prepared yet memorable---think baby halibut or striped bass with olive oil, lemon and fine herbs, served with seasonal organic veggies. Dessert highlights include fresh fruit crisps or French classics such as profiteroles and crêpes. Ask for Beltaire's cheese and fruit specials as well. |
