| This lively neighborhood wine bar is abuzz with Silver Lake locals who, stopping in for a glass of Viognier or Malbec, sigh in relief just to have a chic little spot like this finally blossom in their ’hood. Owner Claudio Blotta, a veteran of Campanile and La Terza, has fixed up this former 1940s bungalow schoolhouse to create a sleek organic space of shiny wood and big windows. It’s got an airy flow that seamlessly blends the central square bar, a charming front patio with vintage glass-and-wrought iron bistro tables, and a noisy rear space adjoining a bustling open kitchen. The global wine list is smart and moderately priced, offering explorers plenty of territory. Chef Don Dickman’s Mediterranean-style small plates proffer savory bites to complement the wines: Sicilian veal meatballs, mild garlic-fried sweetbreads (reminiscent of popcorn shrimp) served with spirited harissa aïoli, roasted octopus salad with saffron sauce, grilled polenta with Gorgonzola fonduta, and tender duck leg confit. Or just indulge in some compelling artisan cheeses (like a cow’s milk from Utah rubbed with espresso and lavender named "Barely Buzzed") or the old charcuterie standby, aged prosciutto di Parma. And for dessert, consider a red velvet or peanut butter “cakewich” (a layered, chocolate-covered mini-cake). |
