Baxter Station is housed in a century-old shotgun house with a long history as a neighborhood tavern, and proprietor Andrew Hutto greets most of his regular patrons by name. The railroad-themed décor includes murals of dining car interiors, a few antique train seats as dining chairs and even an electric train that circles the restaurant on a track near the ceiling. Dishes range from a notable burger and fried fish sandwich to a selection of well-executed pastas and entrées such as a cherrywood-smoked pork chop and tuna au poivre. Desserts change frequently, but usually include flavored cheesecake and a carrot cake that makes eating your vegetables fun. The bar features more than 20 craft and imported beers on tap, a wine list of 30 bottles under $30 and an impressive selection of fine bourbons. Arrive early on winter evenings to get a table by the fireplace. The restaurant's roofed deck is popular when the weather is fine and can be enclosed for all-season dining.
