This down-to-earth eatery enlivens the Bird Rock scene with its creative cocktails, thumping happy hour, notable cuisine and live music, making it a favorite for a wide range of clientele. The friendly ambience reflects Dave and Megan Heine's engaging personalities---they are owners who truly enjoy their work. Chef Scott Cathcart deftly helms the kitchen producing progressive American cuisine; we recommend his duck confit tacos---savory bites with just the right amount of heat from smoked paprika and sambal in the aïoli. Fresh ahi tartare perches on soft chunks of avocado and jícama above a layer of edamame purée; a macadamia and wasabi puff caps tender scallops. The Bird Rock grilled salad hits smoky notes and has a satisfying crunch of grilled romaine and radicchio that plays off the soft feta's texture and tzatziki vinaigrette. Sea bass mingles with white beans and truffle avocado relish, an ensemble that feels healthy and hearty at once. (Yes, nuggets of cured bacon add to the success.) Cap the evening with a bananas Foster bread pudding with hazelnut ice cream and a dark rum reduction. Service is swift, friendly and conscientious, though low fi and in tune with the vibe of the place.
