THIS ESTABLISHMENT IS CLOSED Lake Pontchartrain isn't quite visible from Beebe's, but it certainly makes its presence felt in the form of cool breezes gracing the deck and the large outdoor seating area. The menu ranges widely, with pad thai and pork burritos sharing the billing, but most of the food is united by obvious care in preparation and fine raw ingredients. Salads are exuberantly fresh, and the chicken and sausage gumbo is rich and dark. Pasta has the light texture and luminous mouth feel of fresh, handmade noodles, while a mahi mahi filet might be spread with intense, salty olive tapenade. The brunch menu sticks to a more contemporary style, such as grits with truffle oil and smoked salmon with black caviar and crème fraîche on brioche. Proprietress Brenda Mac is a jazz singer who opened Beebe's in the former location of Wolfe's, and she has made live music a major component of her restaurant. Contemporary jazz bands perform in the dining room on Friday and Saturday nights and at Sunday brunch. This makes casual conversation pretty difficult in the small confines of the restaurant, though the tables outside are more serene even during drum solos.
