Bertha's Restaurant Review: If it were only for the sight, one should not miss this tavern-eatery for its authentic décor and atmosphere. As you step inside through a narrow passage along the welcoming bar, you are immediately immersed into the ambience of a maritime past. You don't need much imagination to see in the darkness of the rooms the ghosts of the courageous seafaring adventurers smoking their pipes and sipping their pints of ale. The pièce de résistance at Bertha's is the mussels. They are steamed, but what makes them different is the accompanying butter in which various complements of your choice are added, such as garlic, capers, basil, scallions, spinach, anchovies, tomato and mustard. Or try the seafood entrées, especially the creamy shellfish Royale or oysters William served over toast points, and don’t miss the soft-shell crabs in season. There is a brunch on Sundays and jazz at the bar at night. |
