Big Sur Bakery & Restaurant Restaurant Review: South coast residents flock to this funky, ranch-style restaurant to pick up wood-fired, nine-grain breads and other bakery indulgences such as “jammin’ jelly donuts.” The kitchen maintains a simple and pastoral repertoire. For example, choose from a burger to remember, served on a house-made bun with thick-cut steak fries, and pizzas that bring the wood oven into play. Still straightforward and in character with the menu, the ante is upped with rustic wild salmon and succotash or a crispy half chicken --- both epitomize craggy coastal cuisine. And there's every chance your mushrooms were foraged nearby and the shellfish was harvested right off the coast. The evolving wine list will always note an interesting label. Staff has a flair for the theatrical; but then, what else would be expected in one of the most dramatic places on earth?
