Dining room at Big Sur Bakery & Restaurant, Big Sur, CASouth coast residents flock to this funky, ranch-style restaurant to pick up pastry chef Michelle Rizzolo’s wood-fired, nine-grain breads and other bakery indulgences (jammin’ jelly donuts that ooze sugary peril). Her husband, chef Philip Wojtowicz, shares kitchen space, kicking it with a simple and pastoral repertoire. He delivers a burger to remember, served on a house-made bun with thick-cut steak fries and pizzas that bring the wood oven into play. Still straightforward and in character with the menu, Wojtowicz ups the ante: rustic wild salmon and succotash and a crispy half chicken epitomize craggy coastal cuisine. Anything home-baked equals a home run; when in season the cherry tart or blueberry ice box cheesecake will set anyone right on a Highway 1 journey. There's always an interesting label on the evolving wine list. The staff has a flair for the theatrical---but then, what else to expect in one of the most dramatic places on earth?
