| If you're searching for signs of life in Hartford after dark, head for Pearl Street, where the petite, intimate Bin 228 surprises with its jazzy vibe, extensive line-up of Italian wines by the bottle or glass, and limited yet sophisticated grazing menu. If your wine knowledge is sparse, servers will expertly guide you toward something that suits your tastes and pairs well with the light selections that emerge from the kitchen. A Friulian Tocai with grapefruit overtones, for example, is the perfect crisp chaser for a mixed green salad with slivered almonds, fresh pear and a warmed goat cheese-smothered crostini. A spicy, robust Umbrian red complements a rich plate of seafood risotto. We appreciate that dishes we ask to share are served on two plates---it's all the encouragement we need to sample bruschetta topped with snappy asparagus, melted Parmesan and truffle oil; and panini filled with goat cheese, portobellos and sun-dried tomato pesto. This is not your average sandwich shop panini, but a gourmet incarnation of the Italian sandwich that begs to be nibbled and savored. Plan to linger. You'll feel comfortable here, whether your dining companion is a friend, colleague, or spy novel---but it's especially great for a quiet, intimate date. |
