Dining room at Bistrot Zinc, Chicago, IL

Romantic, comfortable and très bistro in feel---from the snappy tile floor to the zinc bar and café tables---this place toes the line without so much as a waiver. The French onion soup is quite good, as are the herbaceous mussels and the twice-baked chèvre soufflé. And the bouillabaisse, when available? It’s one of the better versions you'll come across. Lunch brings on more classics---a decent croque monsieur with very good frites, for example. Tables near the kitchen door should be avoided (unless you are into watching the kitchen happenings).
