| Executive chef John Turner prepares some distinctly Texan dishes alongside the standard American fare at BlackFinn’s Houston outpost. All of the food is composed with mostly locally sourced ingredients. There are carne asada nachos that are a meal unto themselves, with tender lime-marinated grilled beef and lots of cheese. We also like the chicken and corn enchiladas. With a nod to the Gulf Coast, Turner has created a huge chopped seafood salad, and he’s also responsible for the pineapple upside-down carrot cake with whipped cream cheese. You’ll find BlackFinn’s well-known bacon-wrapped meatloaf, burgers and lobster mac ‘n’ cheese too. The bar, two dining rooms and spacious dog-friendly patio have a clubby feel with lots of wood, WiFi and multiple flat screens for watching the game. Lone Star State sports memorabilia abounds, and Texas belt buckles and spurs adorn one wall. It’s a mostly young crowd, many walking over from the Midtown high-rises that surround the restaurant to enjoy the food, drinks and live entertainment on the patio Friday and Saturday nights. |
